"If You Can't Stand The Heat, Don't Blow Up The Kitchen." -- Me

About this (WIP) image: Pulling the camera back from the cover art: A ground-based beam weapon fired into a hillside reveals a secret cave and an entrance to the Locusts' 'subseranean' Hollow.

Before I started, I showed the new Gears 3 cover art to some friends and family and asked for their impressions. Those who were unfamiliar with Gears thought the game was about conventional warfare (between humans, on Earth). That makes sense, as the only Locust on the cover art is small and lost in the background haze. So I set out to take the cover art just a bit further, with the aim of clearing up any misconceptions the casual observer might have about the game.

Marcus is the undisputed face, icon, and leading star of Gears of War, so more than anything I wanted a tricked out, detailed version of him (still working on it), with an equally tricked out (and gold) Lancer rifle. The rest of the scene was painted to show that Gears of War is much more than just "a war game". It has everything. Beauty, full immersiion, and with more than a little of the fantastic throughout.

Any feedback, especially suggestions and critiques, are much appreciated!

I don't know the game, but this artwork is just amazing! I love how you show a conflict there: it's a dangerous situation, the others are waiting for the guy in the foreground, but there is something going on inside of him, some kind of difficult decision or maybe he is just resting before a final fight.
The contrasts here underline very well the tension of the situation, but also the tension between inside the cave and outside. Despite those lava seas in the cave, the cave seem safer than outside, although it looks more friendly out there. Maybe this is the reason why he is still resting there? I don't know, but you have offered many possible interpretations for this artwork, which is for me the sign of a great piece of art!
The weapon in the foreground and what the guy wears have a different structure than the ground and the cave, that makes the picture deeper and more interesting.
Just a little thing disturbs me very little: the cave attracts my attention with it's structure, because it seems a bit too different from the rest, I think it would be better if it was more similar to the rest of the picture.

All in all this artwork is amazing. I'm sure it cost a lot of time and all effort you put in was totally worth it! =)

This is absolutely positively breathtaking. I love this so extremely much.

I love how you wanted to portray this. That is exactly how I would describe the game.

I'm completely out of words. Wow.

WOW!!!! This one is sooo damn good in so many ways....The floor idea, the sense of danger, the overall mood...the use of color. The way the Dom figure is holding his gun has that "I'm peering into an unknown cave" look, so it's great that you used him this way instead of putting him inside with Marcus. Your gold tones on the gun and armor is a big improvement over the stock original, imo.
I would put this in the top 20 of all entries, for sure. The only slight issue I have is the blue glowing structure on the right is too similar in size to Marcus. This "big mass on the leftside", "big mass on the rightside" and a white area in the center of the artwork produces to much symmetry...if that makes sense. I would have made the blue structure half the size of Marcus, or alternatively made it bigger than Marcus by extending it up into the roof. Then Marcus wouldn't be "visually competing" with another object in the cave that's the same size. Also the laser is unattractive looking. looks like a fan. It's not necessary to explain the opening of the wall, the mood of your excellent artwork tells a good story by itself. Please don't think I'm being overly critical. I'm only critiquing because I feel with these changes your concept would be in top 3 of ALL 3000 entries. I still can't believe your fine entry didn't make the finals but "Marcus riding a playground toy" did. WTF!!

Thank you for that, and for taking the time to give detailed thoughts on my entry - they were all spot on, I thought. We should have collaborated!

For the record, I actually thought the "Gears of Fun" was well done, especially brilliant from a promo stance. I would NOT be surprised if it took the grand prize, it's so original, and obviously fan art, obviously tongue in cheek. It's a "kids/boys and their toys" kind of thing, the message being, "Yeah, we're shooting things to pieces and blowing shit up everywhere int the game, but really, we're all just a bunch of little kids having a blast in a playground sandbox."

I love how you put the RIFT_OMEN in the lava and really awesome how you have some characters hiding in this pic and Demon Calling. Marcus looks relaxed but ready for the berserker. Top 100 if I was a judge wouldn't even question it.

Pretty impressive work. What I like about this is the fact that you applied the skull cog in the ground looking like a lava stage. Just wanted to say that it really reminds me of the new Mortal Kombat logo looking all fiery lava like. In fact, it seems like an arena that could be used for Mortal Kombat if there were Gears of War characters in the game. lol. Only thing that bothers me is the berserker figure in the cave behind Marcus. In my opinion, it kind of takes away from the rest of the image. Other than that Nice job. :)

Cheers, and thanks for the thoughtful and detailed reply - I agonized over that stupid berserker, and ended up leaving him in there, against my better judgment, because my son thought it was "so sick". lol

Ah I understand. lol. I'm trying to picture it without the berserker and it would seem kind of blank unless there was really good texture. But yea my 1st thought of when I was analyzing your image, I was like "is that what I think it is? whoa that looks pretty freaky" because I didn't expect to see that. haha. I guess it works to show that the cave is a dangerous place.

Reserve the name once you win something for it! I promise, you can take the credit. I'm merely glad the piece exists, to be quite honest. Nothing like a good piece of artwork to liven one's day. :3

..Though I wouldn't at all be surprised if this took you somewhere. It's really quite well done. To elaborate more, would to hand you the award myself.

Wow, I appreciate that and would to hand you a judge's seat if I could! =D

I'm actually quite intimidated by some of the beyond amazing "all original" entries in this contest - scores in fact. The heavy hitters came in droves toward the end, just like clockwork, such that I'll consider myself extremely fortunate at this point if I can make it into the top 100.

BUT...your words of praise and encouragement livened up my day, so thank you very much.

Out of curiosity, which type of media did you use? (Photomanipulatipon, digital painting, etc...)

Hi there! Photoshop manipulation and enhancement of the characters, plus liberal use and manipulation of bits and pieces from the asset pack. The cooled lava, for example, was started with black asphalt from one pic in the asset pack. The cave rock also started from bits and pieces from the mountains in another pic. The doorway to the Hollow was started in Zbrush, but further manipulated and textured in Photoshop. The rocks in front of the Hollow door were actually done in acrylic! It was just to save time, because I can hand paint a lot of landscape stuff faster using traditional media (I'm old - just getting my feet wet on digital painting). The rest was digitally painted in Photoshop with my cheesy little Bamboo tablet and the aid of lots of layers and blending options.

I love, love, love traditional, but it's the habit I'm trying to break (I'm old, and promised myself I'd learn to be comfortable with digital if it killed me!). It is nice, though, knowing that if I get stuck I can always paint, scan and manipulate my own stuff in a pinch.

I donno much about digital media to be honest plus I have a more cheesy crappy tiny Chinese graphics tablet >.< (impatiently waiting for a bamboo XD) . Anyway, I'm more used to traditional media and their intuitive use although I sometimes struggle with oil painting since it has odors and requires space and time :S . It's really great that people still use and manufacture traditional media after the digital art explosion ^^
